A rare cattle egret once stayed a while in the paddock of this idyllic cottage in little Leigh on Mendip. Drive past rare-breed sheep, horses and hens to arrive at the old 18th-century stone barn, recently transformed by Michelle and family into a light inviting sanctuary for devotees of animals and nature. Snug but supremely comfortable (pale oak, white walls, smart leather sofas) the kitchen, living and dining space is all one. French windows pull in the light and let you spill outdoors. If you don't feel like cooking in the white and modern kitchen, then fire up the barbecue, or drop in on the local inn - a short stroll. There are two bedrooms here, one at either end, simple but spotless with blackout curtains and oak shutters to guarantee undisturbed sleep. Nature is all around: a green-fringed gravel patio promises birdsong and sunshine, solar panels heat water, and Rosie the rescue pony frisks in the paddock. Eggs in your welcome hamper are from the family's flock of free-range ducks and hens. There's something for everyone here: wander to pretty Leigh, visit the cathedral and farmers' market at Wells, climb Glastonbury's Tor. Or visit Bath, a 40-minute drive.
