Park Neuk Cottage

Park Neuk Cottage, Park Neuk, Rosewell, Midlothian, Scotland

So peaceful, yet a 40-minute bus run from Edinburgh. At a crossroads of tracks dividing three fields is a white, one-storey dwelling tucked into the undergrowth. Enter the gate and the garden (a hide and seek heaven, as you will discover) and there are John and Kim to greet you: lovely people, they live in West Lothian but work very hard at making this cottage the place it is (strewing salt across the path when ice is expected, removing feather cushions from the allergy-prone). This was Kim's parents' house and it is filled with 4,000 books, most of them in the cosy single bedroom - the 'Library'. The double bedroom is a big room with a homely feel, the twin is in the old cow byre, its walls rustically exposed, its pine beds topped with colourful crochet. All three share a bathroom - small, white and bright. Then there's the living/dining area, an L-shaped room off the kitchen with a table for eight and a long low window overlooking patio, garden and bird-feeders; rabbits, squirrels, pheasants drop by, too. A sofa and armchairs of colourful hues pull up before an open fire, there are board games and a train set and a dresser stuffed with books. The kitchen is spotless and astonishingly well-equipped. Anglers, walkers, cyclists, golfers and families with young children will love it here.
