The Corn Mill, Solva, Pembrokeshire, Wales
A converted mill a short drive from the fishing village of Solva. Pootle through dense woods and across an old stone bridge to a courtyard surrounded by cottages - all peaceful and pretty and by the river. Walk straight in to a big sunny kitchen with creamy stone walls, beams painted pale blue, brightly spotted cushions, a huge table and an Aga-style range humming with warmth; bliss to eat by candlelight here (or spill into the garden in summer). There are two sitting rooms, one with the ancient mill workings intact at one end, perfect for teenagers with its contemporary striped rugs and huge TV; the other is more grown up and has three squashy sofas and a big open fire. Bedrooms are mostly a good size, cream walled, wooden floored, with splashes of colour here and there. Mattresses are thick, pocket-sprung and covered in cloudy goose down; there's a shower downstairs and baths in upstairs' rather snazzy bathrooms. Walls are dotted with boldly coloured contemporary art; if you take a fancy to it, you can buy it! The delights of the coast and St David's await, but you could stay here and fish in the river if you prefer not to go far. Wonderfully relaxing.
