Marlowe Cottage, Caldbeck, Cumbria, England
How fitting that this serene village house is named after a Shakespearian actress! Its sophisticated style is thanks to Jen, who loves picking out antique furniture, unusual artworks, fine old mirrors and pottery pieces. Shelves in the large, beamed living room groan with posh trinkets, flowers and books, while two fireplaces hold a blackened range and wood-burner. Snuggle into a leather sofa, dine at a chunky table or spill out to the patio barbecue and sunny terraced lawn. In the cosy fitted kitchen there'll be a hamper of home-baked treats to greet you (meals can be ordered too). Upstairs are two inviting bedrooms, subtly luxurious with their vintage pine dressers, marble-topped tables, lacy pillows on cast iron beds. There's a small fireplace in one bathroom along with a whirlpool bath and fluffy towels. Downstairs is a sweet single room and, if you need to retreat, a winding wooden staircase leads to a tiny mezzanine, all oak floors, beams and rough white walls. Pretty Caldbeck is an old North Lakes milling village, just as tranquil now as it was a hundred years ago – strolling ducks and sheep, a village green, tea rooms, a 12th-century church – and of course this all comes wrapped in glorious Lakeland countryside.
