Tigh Cilmartin, Staffin, Portree, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Passing beneath the magnificent pinnacle of the Old Man of Storr, the road, at times single track, winds down to Staffin. Both manse and church, designed by Thomas Telford in 1829, are white and well-proportioned. The grounds are bordered by the Kilmartin river, a field is grazed by the neighbours' sheep and a short walk brings you to the grey sands of the wild bay. The owner spent her childhood holidays here and wanted to recapture the magic – hence Tigh Cilmartin: spacious, immaculate and full of character. The living area's windows pull in both landscape and light, the furniture is new and in sympathy with the house, the wood-burner in the fireplace keeps things cosy; there's even a WiFi-friendly study. The kitchen, too, is modern with a period feel (cream range, traditional fittings) and equipped for those who love cooking - and wine: note the integrated wine cooler. Bedrooms upstairs are as light and inviting as all the rest, beds are new brass white-painted, curtains gentle floral, linen white, blankets cream, double mattresses huge, and the trout river (you may fish) lulls you to sleep. White bathroom shelves are stocked with white towels, soaps are hand-made and there's a pretty roll top under one window. The Trotternish peninsula is absolutely stunning – what a treat to be here!
