Glengower House, John Street, Craigellachie, Aberlour, Banffshire, Scotland
With a snug full of toys and a sweet enclosed garden (summer house, climbing frame, swing) this, for kids, is ideal. The house is also perfectly positioned for an active Scottish holiday, with walking, fishing, mountain biking and canoeing close by and the most clement climate in North Scotland. As for Craigellachie, it's a conservation village on the banks of the Spey that's managed (thus far) to hold on to its post office, two pubs and tiny primary school – peacefully opposite the house. Built in 1893, the house has kept all its pine doors and its cast-iron fireplaces with tile surrounds. It's spacious, comfortable and fashionably uncluttered. There are three comfy sofas in the main room, art on the walls, games, DVDs, and that extra snug with an extra TV. The kitchen/dining area is large, warm and friendly: new slate floors, farmhouse table, two-oven Aga and all the cookbooks and utensils a domestic goddess could need. On the half-way landing is the main family bathroom; above, four fresh bedrooms with hill views. Craigellachie also happens to be bang on the famous malt whisky trail – you could try a different dram each day of the year!
