Cruggleton Lodge, Home Farm, Garlieston, Newton Stewart, Dumfries & Galloway, Scotland
They say good things come to those who wait – this certainly applies to Cruggleton Lodge. Negotiating a charming tangle of farm tracks to get here takes time, but when you reach this Hansel and Gretel cottage in the far southwest of Scotland – a former estate lodge – you're rewarded with spectacular clifftop views that reach across the shimmering Irish Sea to one side and to ancient trees, open fields and the ruins of a 13th-century castle to the other. But the real surprise comes when you step inside. Painstakingly rebuilt by Ella and husband Finn from a crumbling shell, this heralds a change of tack from your usual country retreat. Contemporary in style, think: oak floors with thick rugs, white walls made striking with prints and stag's horns, a wood-burner in cream and shutters for every view-filled window. A tree-branch stair rail carries you upward, where a travertine-tiled bathroom, a white sleigh bed dressed with white cotton and a smaller twin with views to the castle await. Cocoon yourself – make use of the iPod dock, DAB radio, or bookshelves – buy organic beef or lamb from the estate and cook in, the kitchen is well-equipped. Or, walk from the door, cycle, sail or fish. This is a super-chic bolthole in the sticks and it's fabulous.
