Rosehill Lodges

Rosehill Lodges, Porthtowan, Cornwall, England

Modernity without mediocrity: these elegant lodges follow the path of the on-site stream down a valley that fans out into Porthtowan beach - one of the most sublime on the North Cornwall coast. Each lodge is topped with a mop of turf roof: on some, the grass hangs like a hippy hairdo. Within, the Cornish larch from which the lodges are built stands proud. Packed with mod cons (from granite breakfast bars to 'personal hot tub spas' on the decking), they are impeccably well turned out. As if this were not special enough, they are also built and maintained with sustainability at heart. The insulation is remarkable, the floors are bamboo, the lights low-energy, there's a solar-heated drench shower to sweep the sand away and you won't forget to recycle your rubbish: there are compartmentalised bins outside every front door. Owners and creators John and Pauline have been recycling since the days they had to pay to do it, such is their single-mindedness. Stroll from your lodge to the beach where you can even dine green: the Blue Bar has recently won its own Green Tourism award. You're half way between St Ives and Newquay and a short cross-country drive from Falmouth - green, swish and in a super spot.
