The Lodge, Stonehouse Farm, Brampton, Cumbria, England
If a kitchen is the heart of a house, then this rambling sandstone lodge – a food store that outlived the mansion it served – has a huge heart. Enjoy Aga-cooked meals at the dining table and cosy breakfasts at the granite-topped bar: there are oak beams above, warm stone floors below, and room for several sofas by cheery bay windows. More space to relax in the sitting room, before a log stove or on a sofa bathed in sunlight from French windows. Fling these open to the landscaped yard and gas barbecue, where a sculptural fountain trickles amid stone flags and pretty shrubs. Ground-floor bedrooms are old-school in the right way: plush fabrics in reds, blues and tartan; gilt-framed pictures; plenty of space. Each has a modern bathroom, one comes with a wet corner and a roll top bath. Be spoiled by Kath, whose family farm backs onto the lodge... in springtime, lambs wander on the lawn. She'll deliver chef-made meals or wine to your door, and can arrange childminding if you would like it. Quiet Hayton – three miles from Hadrian's Wall, close to Carlisle – has a charming centre with a pub. There are walks in Gelt Woods and watersports and cycle routes in Talkin Tarn park; the North Lakes and Eden Valley are the other big attractions.
