The Old Nursery, Bourton Manor

The Old Nursery, Bourton Manor, Bourton Manor, Bourton, Much Wenlock, Shropshire, England

Sweep up the drive to a vast house with towering chimneystacks (22 at the last count!). Slipping behind the façade of this romantic, rambling Arts & Crafts manor, you cross the cobbles and spiral up to the Old Nursery. Sideways sash windows and Pugin shutters hint at a former life, but this tranquil space has found the perfect new position as a stylish country apartment, polished and plumped to perfection. Classy flower-strewn sofas and armchairs rest in a calm, uncluttered sitting room. Close by is a light and airy open-plan kitchen with every pot, pan and tool you might need. Share supper around a circular pine table then retire for a king-size snooze having taken in views over the paddock (note the rare-breed black and white Balwen sheep). The twin is cosy and child-friendly, the bathrooms are gleaming, thick-towelled and faultless. In the late 1800s this romantic old English manor was the county home of Lord Wenlock; the current owners are tirelessly restoring it to full glory. Seated in rolling hills in the Corvedale and close to the Shropshire Way, it's the best kind of country retreat: grand architecture, stunning views, a relaxed mood. All this and gastro-capital Ludlow and the industrial magnificence of Ironbridge just beyond the door.
