Rydal Cottage, 9 Great William Street, Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, England
Shakespeare was born down the road from this sweet cottage in Stratford-on-Avon. You'll find its red front door tucked into a row of terraced late Victorian houses - a short stroll from the river, the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre, the pubs and shops of this legendary town. Step straight into the kitchen, immediately stylish and welcoming with its slate floor, stainless-steel range and all you need to prepare a cosy meal around the rose-pink café table. When the sun's out, head to the little paved back garden where you can fire up the barbecue and dine in seclusion under the shade of a big umbrella. The living room is spotless, soft-carpeted and has all you need to keep everyone happy. Don't expect quirky curios or strange surprises – the beauty of this place is its spick and span simplicity. Upstairs are two restful doubles, one street-side, the other overlooking the garden; both share a nicely tiled ground-floor bathroom with heaps of smellies and a roll top bath. You are walking distance from Stratford station, or you can park outside the door and stroll through the streets. Hop in the car to explore the region's castles, cities and towns; Oxford is 30 miles away. Super-convenient, great value, and with all the comforts you need.
