Ard Daraich Garden Studio, Ardgour, Fort William, The Highlands, Scotland
Cross Loch Linnhe on the Corran ferry and you shed a layer of stress. On to Ard Daraich (Gaelic for 'the house beneath the oak') and relaxation begins. The open-plan Garden Studio, next to the former holiday home of Constance Spry, has had former lives already – as a potting shed and, not so long ago, as an artist's studio. Now stylishly refurbished, it embraces charm and originality in equal measure. On the walls, pop art prints by Gerald Laing create an exciting alternative to the natural world framed in the picture windows: the Studio sits at the foot of a magical hill garden renowned for its rhododendrons and acers, resplendent in late spring. Climb to the top and drink in the views from Ben Nevis to Mull, sit still on the beach or tramp the old drove road that passes your door. Or walk to the village pub – it's two miles. Come home to a romantic soak in the double-ended bath upstairs, before plucking a good book from the library and sinking into a sofa in front of the wood stove. At night, climb up into your bed under the eaves, absorb the silence and look up at the stars. Heaven.
Check in after 3.30pm, check out by 10.30am.
