The Old Rectory, Main Street, Wroxton, Oxfordshire, England
Three years ago Alison came to this Domesday Book estate village. Now that her 16th-century house, with its huge spreading yew and thatched eyebrow windows, is in apple-pie order, she is handing it over to guests. Wide flag steps lead up to the back door of the bright creamy kitchen, winding stairs and twisty corridors head to elegant yet simply furnished bedrooms. Gazing from the deep ledged windows of these high peaked-roof rooms your eye follows the timeless thatched ironstone houses winding along the street, past the busy duck pond and the pub to the walls of the old Augustinian Abbey. A rare thatched church adds to the ecclesiastic treasure box. This is a house for easy, comfortable sharing; a big sunny Aga-friendly kitchen, generous sofas on dog-friendly flagged floors by a vast fireplace, a bright Georgian summer sitting room overlooking the terraced front garden, armchairs in hidden corners. The family bathroom with its French tub oozes rectory chic. Young, smiling Alison welcomes you with vegetables from her organic allotment – and if you time it right you will enjoy the annual swan procession as the warden ferries them home, from the agitated duck pond to the posh Abbey lakes.
