The Gallery Townhouse

The Gallery Townhouse, Fore Street, Beer, Devon, England

What a gem of a place Beer is. The hill drops down to the pretty village street and ends at a spectacular pebbled bay. Whitewashed cottages, shops, cafés, restaurants and galleries line both sides of the street; tucked up a passageway is a blue front door, entrance to an old smugglers' house. Now a smart clothes shop fills the front and a contemporary, light-filled holiday house lies behind, its three floors linked by tall stairs. On the ground floor is a snug with a sofa and a TV for kids, on the first, three bedrooms and a super family bathroom, on the top, the 'loft', a lovely spacious open-plan living space with sage-green beams and an exposed stone wall, and windows overlooking the rooftops. Tucked to one side is a well-equipped kitchen, in the centre is a beech dining table for six, to the side, sleek leather easy chairs. Bedrooms, off the biggish landing below, have lambswool mattresses, eco paints, crisp white linen. Outside, and down a little lane, is parking for one car. The young owners live close by, happily on hand to give advice. Follow the stunning cliff path to Branscombe, buy fresh fish down on the beach, enjoy a crab sandwich at the family-friendly Dolphin. In the summer there's a regatta (and swimming for the hearty!) but Beer will charm you in every season.
