Rubens Barn

Rubens Barn, Droke Lane, East Dean, Sussex, England

Pheasant strut, shy deer bounce by – sure signs that you're immersed in the impressive Goodwood Estate. This little flint barn is tucked in one of the most unspoilt woody corners of Sussex, yet easily close enough to the harbour lights and life of Chichester. Sitting on a leafy lane, the 'rush-hour' consists of the occasional tractor, car or combine. Renovated to the highest order, in duck-egg blue with hints of gold, this is a stylish, relaxed retreat. Downstairs, cream sofas perch alongside a spic-and-span Shaker kitchen. There's a truly luxurious bedroom with oversized bed, silk throws and velvet cushions and a gleaming shower room; think slate tiles, heated rails and fluffy bathrobes. Upstairs find a big bedroom with separate beds, a roll-top bath close by, and soft lights and white towels. Tuck into fruits and cheeses, coffee and croissants for breakfast, all provided by the lovely owners who live in the main house, then grab the binoculars, pad through French doors onto the neat little patio and spy on that local wildlife. Play the odd game of tennis on the next-door court and borrow the barbecue to rustle up an al fresco feast. Sussex at its best – hidden well away yet never far from civilisation.
