Mazzard Farm, East Hill, Ottery St. Mary, Devon, England
Seven miles from sleepy Sidmouth, at the foot of East Hill, are 17 acres of old apple farm, now populated with tipis, hens, farmhouse, gardens, play areas, a large courtyard with picnic tables and six super cottages. It's heaven for children and relaxing for grown-ups, what with pampering treatments from Jacqueline (Indian head massages, Japanese facials) and heaps to do. As for Quarenden Cottage, the former apple store, it's the largest in the row, and beautifully cared for inside and out. You get sweeping oak floors and a huge leather sofa, fashionable florals and a wood-burning stove, atmospheric lighting and courtyard views. The bathrooms are top-notch (fabulous fittings, delicious local soaps), the open-plan kitchen is a cook's delight and the bedrooms fit snugly under the eaves. The owners live in the farmhouse: keen greens, foodies too – Jacqueline makes marmalade, lemon curd, apple juice and wonderful crumbles in season, putting an honesty box on the side; there's also meat from the farm next door. And they provide an intelligent list of local attractions: the Donkey Sanctuary for little ones, Crealy Adventure Park for when it rains, the Jurassic Coast Hopper for a grand day out.
Joins with Damson Cottage to form one cottage for 10.
