Old Cello Workshop

Old Cello Workshop, 28 The Green, Richmond, Yorkshire, England

Marcia used to buy her daughter's cello strings here! Now the former stringed instrument workshop – originally a farm byre – has become a warm and cosy home for six. Its setting is one of the most covetable in North Yorkshire: off charming Richmond's Green, flanked with elegant Georgian houses. Views are to the bottom of Marcia's garden (she, smiley and hospitable, lives just across the road) and up towards Culloden Tower; you couldn't be more central. A black wrought-iron gate opens to a paved front patio (with table and chairs when it's warm) and a neat white front door. Step in to find a three-storey space; a kitchen/breakfast room and a bathroom on the ground floor, a short flight of stairs to the living area above, and steps down to two doubles. A separate stair leads to the twin room in the attic – sweet, secluded and perfect for older children. The fresh modern double (and double-glazed) bedrooms face the road, with feature wallpapers and comfy new beds. The living room, lofty but cosy in spite of the apex rafter roof, sports matching sofas and armchairs, a gas-fired 'wood' stove, a bookcase stuffed with novels, guides and night-time diversions, from jigsaws to games to DVDs. The river Swale lies just below and there's a lovely walk alongside it to Easby Abbey. Bring the dog!

Parking space for one car.
