Riverside House

Riverside House, Tuckenhay, Totnes, Devon, England

The tide ebbs and flows here, people potter around in rowing boats, the herons and kingfishers dart by. Walk through a stone archway straight into the lovely warm kitchen: the old quay worker's cottage is still very much Felicity and Roger's home, filled with interesting objects from their travels and Felicity's vibrant paintings. A large living room is cosy with a wood-burning stove, comfy sofas, a piano and lots of books and games, and the kitchen has all the mod cons you may need to produce a meal - though you may be distracted by the gorgeous views. Bedrooms (two with balconies overlooking the river) have super mattresses, fresh flowers and dainty china; the family room is perfect for little ones too, with two singles and a set of bunk beds and lots of toys and children's books. Sit in the garden with the quacking ducks and your toes in the water; you can barbecue here in summer, and there's a slipway so bring your own canoes and dinghies, or rent locally. If you don't feel like cooking it's a small hop to the pub for live music and good food. Totnes is near, there's Dartmoor for walking and riding, and stunning beaches and coastal paths beckon.

Bring your own linen and towels.
