Woodgate Hall

Woodgate Hall, Lowick Green, Ulverston, Cumbria, England

This smart white farmhouse stands in one of the best spots in the South Lakes, eight miles from Windermere and four from Coniston. Nearly four centuries have passed since the house was built in typical Yeoman style, but it has kept its distinctive circular stairs, round windows, wood-panelled walls and ancient oak doors, along with a fabulous tiled Tudor fireplace in the living room. The rest has been spruced up and extended by Bill and his family, who clearly don't skimp on quality. The heart of the house is the huge kitchen, complete with eight-ring gas cooker, enormous fridge, telly, and brown leather sofas around a wood stove. Serve up in the light dining room with its slate floors and original range; outside there are tables and chairs in the large grassy garden if you prefer a sky for a ceiling. Comfortable bedrooms are spread over three floors, one en suite and the rest sharing a gorgeous oak-floored family bathroom where you can soak in a cast-iron roll-top bath or invigorate aching muscles under a good shower. Wherever you look, find far-reaching views to distant fells criss-crossed by trails; down the road, lakeside towns offering boat trips and what bright lights the Lake District can offer. Great for big families and groups of friends.

New cottage for four (adjoining Hall) also available (un-inspected by Sawdays).
