Bakehouse Cottage, 6 Shop Lane, Weymouth, Dorset, England
Wind your way through the Jurassic Coast's chalk hills, spotting the sea at every bend, then turn into a quiet village and down a leafy lane to find this sweet country cottage tucked behind stone walls and a little front garden. All is higgledy-piggledy inside: steps lead down from the small modern kitchen to the dining room – lovely with its old elm refectory table and striking antique sideboard – round the corner lies a cosy sitting room, lit up by a burgundy sofa and kept toasty by a large wood-burner and three radiators. Upstairs find white walls, cream blinds, some modern furniture and bright fabrics to cheer up plain but comfy bedrooms. Cherry blossom floats through the sweet back garden in spring, where you can dine out or barbecue on the terrace. And, Sue, the housekeeper, keeps things tip-top and will help with anything from cooking meals to booking beauty treatments – you only need ask. There's a bike store, walks along the South Coast path (just half a mile from the door), and a good pub in the village. Simple and sunny sums this up: perfect for families and those who love the outdoors.
