Special Escapes: Self-catering in the UK

Higher Farm Cottage

Higher Farm Cottage, Shop Lane, Weymouth, Dorset, England

Families will have a ball in this handsome Grade II-listed stone house, tucked behind high walls and sweeping gardens. The place exudes centuries-old charm: original uneven floors, bumpy walls, boxed-in staircases and fine old pieces, like the beautiful porcelain basin in the downstairs loo. Adults can lounge on terracotta sofas in the bright sitting room while kids scamper over tiled floors topped by Turkish kilims or trot out through French doors to the sheltered back garden – its large, level lawn is perfect for ball games. Cook up a feast on the Aga in a smart farmhouse kitchen (there's an electric oven too) and eat together around a scrubbed farmhouse table or outside on the sheltered, secluded terrace. There are sweet singles on the first floor with dainty window seats; above this are two doubles nesting under the eaves. If you need anything, ask Sue the housekeeper, who keeps the place immaculate. The village is quiet (with a good pub) but the Jurassic Coast with its chalk cliffs, coves and pretty villages is two miles off and Weymouth is 15 minutes in the car. This is a holiday home for unpretentious types: big, bright and heaps of fun.
