21 Shoregate, Crail, Fife, Scotland
21 Shoregate is an immaculately decorated fisherman's cottage that stands fifty paces up from the harbour in this historic village. It's delightfully cosy with views from the garden that stretch over the Firth of Forth; you can eat out here in good weather, Crail's answer to the royal box. Inside, it's small and sweet: cool colours run throughout, you get beautifully upholstered armchairs and a sofa in front of the stove, so roll out the Scrabble board or watch a DVD on your flat-screen TV. The ground floor is open-plan with a Shaker-style kitchen that has everything you'll need and a dining table for four. Upstairs, two stylish bedrooms have White Company linen, thick mattresses, smart carpets, pastel throws. Neither are huge, but one is bigger than the other, and the house best suits families, very good friends or a couple who want to escape. You share a lovely, pebble-tiled compact bathroom. As for Crail, Robert the Bruce granted the charter for a weekly market in 1310, while fishermen once supplied London with 20,000 lobsters a year. Further afield, there's golf all along coast and the fish and chip shop in Anstruthern was voted the best in the land. Edinburgh is less than an hour by car.
