The Old Bakery

The Old Bakery, Dolwilym, Hebron, Whitland, Carmarthenshire, Wales

An old bakery is just what this solid stone house once was, along with the servants' quarters for the old Dolwilym estate, cocooned in a Taf valley clearing amid giant moss-covered oaks and wriggling wildlife. Enter a thick-beamed kitchen-diner with flagstone floors, pipes running along white-plastered walls and the old working bread oven inside an inglenook fireplace. Down a few steps is the sitting room: stripy rugs lay about on purple carpet, a patterned sofa and armchairs are there for crashing upon. No watercolours, for sure, but a relaxing, homely space. Two doubles are above, both without pretension: stripped wood floors and doors, beamed ceilings, white washed walls and a splash of colour in the throws that will keep your feet toasty at night. Sweep open the windows to hear happy swallows nesting above. Your fledglings will love having their own little sky-lit space in the loft, with three singles tucked under the eaves. Walk the old railway tracks along the River Taf, or wander the grounds around you; despite the seclusion you can still stroll to the pub for a beer, and you're well-placed for the north and south Pembrokeshire coasts. Relaxed, quirky and wonderful.

Note: One double is on a curtained platform in the sitting room.
