Blaencwm, Lord Hereford's Knob, Three Cocks, Powys, Wales
Big style and deep country come hand in hand at this fabulous cottage ten miles south of Hay-on-Wye. You're hunkered down amid green hills in the middle of nowhere: no neighbours, no street lights, no noise apart from local wildlife, just blissful peace, starry skies and a stream that topples over a waterfall. Inside, country chic abounds: colour-washed stone walls, open fires which roar exuberantly, vast timber frames that flaunt their beauty without restraint. Bedrooms are gorgeous. The biggest, up in the eaves, is huge; expect yellow-washed walls, stripped wood floors, a claw-foot bath, skylights for star gazing. Downstairs, an Aga-fired kitchen comes with beams, stone walls, fresh flowers, lots of colour. You can eat outside in good weather or in the stone-flagged dining room, where sofas laze in front of the fire. There's an enormous sitting room, too, where ceilings open to the rafters and a pool table is covered in pink baize. Two more airy bedrooms below are just the ticket: warm colours, comfy beds and lots of books. They share a claw-foot bath and a separate shower that was liberated from the Savoy. Elsewhere, you can fish, ride, raft down rivers or climb big hills, but don't forget to drop down to Hay and pick up a book. Wonderful.
