One of The Observer's 50 Essential Travel Websites
Stonetrail Cottages, Street Farm, Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria, England
Touch down in wildest Cumbria: red deer roam, red squirrels scurry, the wind whistles, and the Howgill Fells are magnificent. Plunge into their undulating folds by foot, mountain bike or horse. It's a pleasure to return to Stoneview's lofty first-floor living room with its stoney walls, rafters and porthole window. Fire up the wood-burner, sink into red velvet sofas – with acres of space it's wonderful for a large family or group of friends. Similarly sociable is the farmhouse kitchen, a modern blend of oak and stone with a table for 12. Powerful showers blast off the day's fatigue, while in bedrooms, simple pine furnishings and night-time silence induce deep sleep. Roll out of bed into your boots and bury yourself in the map room's library of possibilities. Alison offers riding trails from 90 minutes to two days: there are nine mild-mannered Welsh cobs, or you can bring your own horse (and dog). David is on hand at weekends for guided mountain bike rides; bike skills courses are easily arranged, or just hire a bike and let loose. The Pennine Bridleway marches southwards, the Lakes and the Dales are under an hour away – and if a yomp around the fells isn't your thing, the pretty market town of Kirkby Stephen, bookish Sedbergh and good pubs are within a few miles.
Stoneyard (sleeps 2-4) and Stoneheights (sleeps 2) also available.
