One of The Observer's 50 Essential Travel Websites
Fronhaul, Little Newcastle, Pembrokeshire, Wales
Here is peace, wildlife, proximity to the sea, and the seductive Preseli hills versus the Pembrokeshire coastal path. You and the loved one (plus baby, for whom there's a cot) will find a welcome cocktail on arrival and can be cooked fresh trout if you feel lazy. Park by a bleached stone wall and walk into an all-on-one-level living space with heated Welsh flags underfoot, a black leather sofa and locally crafted cherry wood furniture. There are carefully chosen paintings on the rough, whitewashed walls, models of boats dotted around and a little television and wood-burner for cosy nights in. A rather well-equipped stainless steel kitchen with a Siemens coffee maker will delight the most exacting of cooks (bring your beans!). At night, sleep peacefully on a deep mattress with crisp sheets, fresh flowers and cotton robes. Next door live the Swiss owner Beat and his wife, who look after you as little or as much as you want; your garden – brook, pond, summerhouse – links arms with theirs. Fishguard and the best rock pools, sand beaches and Blyton-esque bliss (no candyfloss in sight) are close. Walk 30 minutes to Letterston which has everything you need – post office and award-winning chippy included. This is a little cottage that will appeal not to the masses but to all those after rural peace and quiet.
Apartment cleaned daily, midweek linen and towel change.
