The Garden Cottage

The Garden Cottage, Richmond, Yorkshire, England

Enter a stone-flagged passage at the end of which is a grand old door to the garden beyond: intriguing is the higgledy-piggledy approach to the pretty house on the hill. To the right is the cottage entrance. Garden Cottage, listed and delightful, was once cottage to the main house (demolished in 1824), and one of its many charms is its garden, large, sloping and lovely with shrubs, apple trees, herb garden, borders and magnificent monkey puzzle tree; the mellow brick wall from the original walled garden runs down one side. You are half way up steep Cravengate and the lofty setting is stunning; convenient too, a five-minute walk from town, woodland and river. There's lots of space inside as well as out, and plenty of original features. The paintwork is perfect, the walls nicely patterned, the curtains well-hung, and the traditional striped sofas are as pristine as can be. The main bedroom is gorgeous with a double bed and rafters; another bed has a suede headboard; windows have long views over the Norman castle and the atmospheric old town. For cosy nights in: books, games, DVDs, a wood-burner and a piano you may play. For nights out: two cinemas, the Georgian Theatre Royal and several enjoyable places to dine.

Off-street parking.
