Two Hoots Cottage, Nook Lane, Empingham, Rutland, England
A Rutland village in a striking setting: stone cottages, thatched roofs, farmland, woodland, fields, and a ten-minute stroll from Rutland Water. Two Hoots Cottage is down Nook Lane, an immaculate stone barn conversion fronted by hanging baskets and pretty flowers. More perfection within: chocolate leather sofas and heated Travertine floors, super beds and gorgeous linen, iPod docks, DVD players and a kitchen worthy of a country cottage idyll. The single-storey living area is open plan, its walls and rafters painted soft white; all feels restful and inviting. The main bedroom, smallish, beautifully decorated, is entered via a latched door: a white iron bed, a Venetian blind, a big wardrobe, a vase of flowers. Off here is the bathroom, with sensor lighting and a wet room shower; up the oak stair with rope handrail is the galleried twin, another delightful space. Linda, who lives behind the cottage, supplies a generous breakfast hamper and a bottle of wine. For al fresco dining there's an elegant courtyard with white furniture, plants and chiminea – and an owl to hoot you to sleep: hence the name! As for huge Rutland Water and its shores, all is possible, from fishing, birdwatching, cycling, sailing and windsurfing to cruising on the gracious Rutland Belle.
