Ardtornish, Morvern, Oban, Argyll, Scotland
Golden eagles have been seen soaring, as have sea eagles and otter, and pine martens, wild cats and deer – both red and roe – roam the estate. This is a heavenly place, far far from everything. Yet the estate is an island of civilisation in 60 square miles of highland wilderness – pure and unspoiled. The 'special places' here are scattered among the main Victorian house and its cottages. Some are almost baronial, with original carpets and curtains (especially those in the big house), others more cosy and separate; some are modernised, others not. For sheer scale, views and for firing off delusions of grandeur, plump for the South Wing or the Billiard Room Flat; smaller groups may prefer Castle Cottage or The Boat House: both magical and right by the loch; and, if you have come for the fishing, try Rose Cottage – you can cast into the river from your bedside. The delightful estate management is, by the way, progressive and unusual. You'll need to bring your own linen, but you can pre-order supplies from the estate or a cooked meal from the renowned White House Restaurant close by. You can join a stalking or shooting party, get help arranging a boat trip to Mull or just wander the magnificent gardens around the house – a web of steps and paths amongst wonderful plantings and surprising pieces of modern art. Magnificent: no wonder two thirds of guests return...
