Hideaways in Hay: The Coach House & Stables Cottages, Brook Street, Hay-on-Wye, Powys, Wales
You may have immersed yourselves in literary Hay but somehow it all seems a million miles away. Off a quiet road in the town, through chunky wooden gates, across a cobbled courtyard with a parterre garden and crab apple trees, and you're instantly in a different world. Flagstones tell of a Georgian past, but tireless work by the owners has given this old coach house a whole new life as a contemporary retreat. Plain walls, wooden floors and exposed beams; cosy underfloor heating, comfy sofa and blazing wood-burner. This easy living space leads into a kitchen that wants for nothing. Pop open the wine (part of your welcome), slide in alongside the solid oak table or perch on the wide sill overlooking the plant-strewn yard. Downstairs dozes the little bedroom – lacy blinds and wooden shutters front and back, with fancy shades and flowers lending that extra romantic touch. Hang your hat on the peg once used by the coachman and head across the hall to the bathroom: twin sinks, lovely smellies and a sunken bath to soak in. Many are drawn to this historic town for its innumerable bookshops and renowned literary festival; others tick off Offa's Dyke and the Welsh mountains. It's the perfect hideaway. And if you have bookie friends, the 12th-century stables next door is an equal treat.
