One of The Observer's 50 Essential Travel Websites
The Granary, Hayes Farm House, Reynoldston, Swansea, Wales
Across the lovely open space of Cefn Bryn ridge, past wild ponies, sheep and cows, and on to the little village of Reynoldston. On the outskirts stands an old cattle byre: beech floors, oak beams, granite worktops, slate sills - it's won restoration awards. The Granary is airy in summer, cosy in winter (wood-burning stove, chunky shutters) and captivating all year round, thanks to its gentle site overlooking the Gower peninsula. Peaceful too – if you don't count the sheep that meander past the stable door. On the ground floor are the bedrooms, white shower rooms and vaulted living room/kitchen whose big patio doors open to a terrace with never-ending views; up a spiral stair is a second room with TV and DVD. A restoration that leaves arrow-slit windows intact has no need of plush décor; expect a leather sofa on seagrass matting, chunky furniture from reclaimed wood, real granite worktops and stainless steel appliances, crisp white linen and excellent beds. The owners live in the Welsh longhouse that abuts the barn; welcoming, open and friendly, they are there when you need them. The location could hardly be bettered: a short walk to pub, restaurant and post office/shop; a short drive to sandy beaches; Swansea 20 minutes away.
Pool & gym by arrangement.
