Lanyon Manor, Coswyn Barn and The Coach House, Gwinear Lane, Gwinear, Hayle, Cornwall, England
Off the beaten track, at the end of a half-mile lane... and there stands Lanyon, an immaculate granite Elizabethan building. Next door is Coswyn, a fine old stone barn: and another exemplary restoration. Lanyon is grand – step inside to stylishness, space and a surprise at every turn – a huge kitchen with gleaming new aga; a panelled drawing room (heaps of period furniture, lovely antiques); a south-facing sitting room with an open fireplace; and six fine bedrooms off a galleried landing. The granite arch above the door in Coswyn has a face carved in the middle that is believed to be circa 1250 – yet inside is a charming modernity: beamed ceilings and exposed rafters, solid oak and slate floors, a granite fireplace, a limestone basin, sturdy hand-made beds, auction finds and ceramics from Morocco. Comfort in both is superb, and friendly but discreet owners (for whom nothing is too much trouble) live on-site. As for the bathrooms, they're as good as they get, from an en suite with its own fireplace and slipper bath to a stunning limestone-tiled wet room. Each has a private garden and both have use of the outdoor swimming pool. Beyond is the best of Cornwall: surfing, kite-surfing and clifftop walks, Padstow, St Ives, the Lizard and Lands End.
Also charming Victorian one-storey Coach House with garden sleeps four.
