The Miller's House, The Birches Mill, Clun, Clun, Nr Craven Arms, Shropshire, England
The Miller's House is a neat conversion in part of the original mill. Wake to the music of birdsong and river – all you'll hear in your nest by the River Unk. The Birches Mill and its buildings date back to 1640; corn was ground here right up until the Second World War. Now Gill and Andrew, both artists, are opposite and will happily provide you with a locally-sourced home-cooked meal from their freezer if you arrive exhausted on a Friday night or if you're simply too puffed to cook after a day's hike (and you can order a welcome box of local produce). Downstairs, a living room of exposed stonework, low, beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove. Attached is a small, well-equipped kitchen with fun, colourful tiles and farmhouse-style wooden units. Wind up a book-lined, doll's house stair to an original brass bed – bedrooms are fresh and sky-lit – and wake to the morning sun streaming in through wide velux windows. A wildlflower garden sits behind the cottage, yours to catch the afternoon sun in. Offa's Dyke can be reached by foot, and the gastonomic epicentre of Ludlow is a short hop away.
Landline telephone available at main house. Children over eight welcome. Mill Stream Cottage (sleeps 2) is also available.
