Mulberry Cottage, 14 High Street, Blakeney, Norfolk, England
Every detail is perfect, from the waffle-clad hotties to the chocolates and wine left for you. The decorator-owner of this fisherman's cottage at the end of the lane has added sophistication to lowly origins: here is country elegance on a miniature scale. Where the nets used to dry, a wood-burner glows; the open-plan sitting room is cosy with wing-back chairs, soft lamps and fat sofa. There's aged wood in beam, floor and latched door, a modern shower room and a country-traditional kitchen with circular sink and vintage brass taps. Outside, a sweet little sitting area for balmy nights. Then up the stairs to a bedroom sensuous with rich colours and soft, strokable materials, an antique French bed and a delicate chandelier. A cocooning place where opera may accompany a candle-sconced bath… you could happily stay in all day. Not that you will: the famous quayside is 200 paces off – walks, yachts, saltmarshes, seals – and there's the Blakeney Hotel for breakfast. In short, a romantic bolthole in an enchanting village by the sea. Who could resist?
