Pen Yr Heol, Pentwyn, Brecon, Powys, Wales
Pen Yr Heol means 'head of the road' and it really is at the end; from here on up you're on foot. High on the hillside is a lovely restoration of a 200-year-old shearing shed by local craftsmen using local and reclaimed materials. All is warm and bright inside with masses of space; the open-plan living area and kitchen caters comfortably for ten. This is simple, solid barn living; crisp white walls, original oak beams, wide polished floorboards, raftered ceilings. Everything has been thoughtfully worked out: underfloor heating and a wood-burner stocked with logs, home entertainment that includes Sky Sport, a children's play area – even a toy box! – and a fabulous drying room for wet clobber. You have two shower rooms and bedrooms downstairs – one with a bath where you can soak to valley views – and two more bedrooms upstairs. Outside, the views to the east are inspirational and reach as far as the Black Mountains – there are seating areas at the front and back to take them in from. Take the footpath behind the barn – it leads directly onto the Brecon Beacons and ultimately to Pen y Fan; plus, a half hour trek across fields will bring you to the village pub. Whatever the weather, the walks from your haven in the hills are spectacular.
