Manor Bottom, Manor Road, Wroxall, Isle of Wight, England
Through the woods, across lush pasture, and you are on the Downs – with views over much of the island. It is a great place for flying a kite and spotting all sorts of wildlife – rabbits, red squirrels, hummingbird moths. The house was a barn, but an imaginative architect transformed it long ago, and Dorothy added her own flourishes (the walls are covered with maps and prints – old and new – of the Isle). The big kitchen is the heart of the house, beating with the cosy kick-back sitting room next door (which has a wood-burning stove and firewood provided). The bedrooms, all upstairs off one corridor, are modestly delightful, but the walls and floors are thin so come with family or tolerant friends. You have a shower room on the ground floor and a bathroom above, both with nice toiletries. But the joy of this place is the miscellany of the spaces: a generous entrance/utility, a snooker room, a gorgeous rambling cottage garden with table and chairs under a pergola, and three more lawns, one which slopes up to a field with Arab horses. Flick through the house bible, a mine of information on where to buy local garlic or organic veg, where to eat well, or to find pubs with stunning sea views... Manor Bottom is a remarkable and easy place to stay – perfect for families – and the peace is deep. Walk from the door; the sea is a 10 minute ride and beaches are not much further.
