Jasmine Cottage, No. 9, Turnworth, Dorset, England
In a peaceful Dorset hamlet (whose church Thomas Hardy helped restore) is this deep-country retreat. Bring your favourite novel, find a corner seat in the garden, bury your nose in the roses, and unwind. Once thatched, now tiled, the brick and flint cottage, one of a pair, was a farm labourer's two-up two-down. Now a large, light conservatory has been added giving the house a wonderfully spacious feel. Enter to find a country-contemporary interior, walls painted in delicate hues, original terracotta floors - well-tended with linseed oil - and a downstairs brimming with light. A log burner adds warmth; subtle uplighting – and a sprinkling of fairy lights - add a perfect glow. The sweet kitchen, with an environmentally-sensitive range (it works on a timer, rather than being on all the time) will charm you - though Charlotte has also installed an electric oven and hob should you prefer. Upstairs, the fabulous big beds, dominating the bedrooms, will delight. All feels fresh as a daisy including the all-white bathroom upstairs and, downstairs, the sparkling wet room with full-length mirror and multi-coloured frieze. Outside: a Dorset cottage garden, its borders bursting with plants, its rickety trellis groaning under jasmine and clematis, its terrace asking for a barbecue. The attention to detail is extraordinary, the peace reigns supreme and the pub is only two miles.
