Bratton Mill Cottage

Bratton Mill Cottage, Bratton Mill, Bratton Fleming, Nr Barnstaple, Devon, England

Trout wriggle in the stream; a leaf-encrusted, track wends its narrow way down the wooded valley... and your 600-year-old retreat awaits. Half a mile from Exmoor's western border, by the Farmhouse and the Folly, is this delightful white cottage with a slate roof and greenery in abundance. Pooh sticks from the bridge, dams in the river, a swing pulley, campfires, and eggs to collect: it's brilliant for little ones. In the very private garden you are unseen by human eyes. From table, chairs and rockery, trace a rope fence that winds past lavender and foxgloves to the riverbank; here you'll share your days with kingfishers and buzzards. In summer, try a waterside barbecue; as wintry nights darken, light the wood-burner. You're certain to be spoiled as Marilyn greets you with a hamper of scrumptious wine, brie, bread, eggs, jam, and flapjacks. Cosy and bright, indoors reveals a wholesome blue kitchen, a spotless white suite in a bathroom with pretty curtains, and a downstairs shower. In the bedrooms are floral and cream bedspreads, honey pine, dressing tables, and views east and west of steep hillsides and sky. All this and a clean conscience: there's spring water on tap and Marilyn has a biomass boiler in mind. So wallow in the timelessness of the place, leave the car parked up and set off, on foot or bike, from the door. Within seconds you'll be immersed in nature proper. Dogs are more than welcome, too.

The Folly is also available and sleeps two.
