Swallow's Nest, 1 Chapel Lane, Hebden, Grassington, Yorkshire, England
Hole up for a week and you'll go home happy. The views are green, the walks are heavenly, the pub's down the lane and there are roses round the door. The early 19th-century lead miner's cottage at the end of the terrace is cosy, comfortable and supremely well looked after. Original beams and sash windows are in excellent order, while brand new oak floors sweep through the ground floor and up the stairs to where soft-carpeted bedrooms lie. Everything is as fresh and appealing as can be, from the contemporary checks in curtains and bedcovers to the fabulous little bathrooms with their wood and white décor - and the towel rails and slate-effect floors are all heated. There are halogen lights in white ceilings, artwork on the walls, gleaming pans in the kitchen, a basket of logs by the wood-burner and a folder that bursts with info, from how to reach Parcevall Hall's woodland gardens to the opening times of the village store. And there's a drying room off the hall for barbours and wellies – just what you need in the Yorkshire Dales. The owners' love for the place is evident at every turn – and at the front is a small flagged area so you can sit out and gaze on the church and the hills.
