Colmer's View Annexe

Colmer's View Annexe, Bridport, Dorset, England

By day you're wowed by the views; by night, the stars. To find oneself in such a country setting is a treat. As for the accommodation, it's modern, comfortable and light: Ruth has recently transformed the annexe of her brick-and-wood bungalow (let to guests) into an eco-friendly self-catering space, with a south-facing decked veranda and a modest garden (table, chairs, barbecue) enclosed by a beech hedge. No green detail has been left unchecked: the central heating is driven by the wood-burner, the hot water is heated by solar panels as well as Ruth's Aga (guests may need to top-up the meter a little in winter), and the floor is made of recycled chipboard – softened by kilims and rugs. The well-kitted out kitchen has cream paintwork, a pine table and four new rush-seated chairs, the bathroom, with shower, is simple and white, and the bedroom, with a pretty patchwork on its big bed, is in the old garage – not that you'd know! Super-insulated windows look onto the distant former River Cottage HQ, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty four miles from the sea.

B&B available and ask about creative weekend courses from September 2010.
