The Lighthouse, Old Country Farm, Mathon, Malvern, Worcestershire, England
Ella's dream to build the first 'light house' in Herefordshire has come true. This heavenly retreat is bathed in light – and is equally light on the planet. It's a green-oak build of the highest order, vaulted to the ceiling and uplifting in every sense. Floors and walls are oak, work surfaces granite, baths and beds super-generous, solar panels cloak the roof and the heating is underfoot. A wood-burner and sheepskin rugs warm the sitting room, you eat at a long dining table with Shaker-style ash chairs, there's a snug library to retreat to for drinks, and, with no TV, you make your entertainment as you go, on the Steinway piano and guitar. Spiral up the staircase to a bedroom with a view, its balcony perched over lazily grazing sheep. This tranquil and uncluttered house, the perfect place for reuniting family and friends, is set on the edge of a cider orchard with the Malvern Hills to the east. Slip through glass doors to a garden and farmland that softens every edge, stride down country lanes or across Ella's farm to the hills. Simple yet stunning architecture, green credentials, harmony and space – if only you could bottle it and take it home! Malvern and Ledbury are close.
