The Martyn Room, Crosstown, Morwenstow, Bude, Cornwall, England
Attached to the courtyard of a peaceful Cornish inn, the Martyn Room has been transformed from village hall to sparkling holiday home. Enter the kitchen, large and lovely with new cream units, funky fridge, big pine table and sweep of stripped pine floor; the sitting room, tastefully decorated in contemporary hues, is next door. Cosy and carpeted is the master bedroom downstairs with a super en suite shower; up under the thrillingly steep-pitched eaves lie two more bedrooms and a bathroom. White walls are sprinkled with real art, views reach over Cornish fields to the sea. As for the inn, it reeks with history: once a monastic resting house, later a smugglers' haunt, parts of it date back to AD950 – note the Celtic piscine in one wall. With its stone-flagged, character-steeped bar and charming, contemporary restaurant (beef and lamb from local farms, fish straight from the ocean), it's a delicious place to return to after a blowy day out on the South West Coastal Path. Take a pint and a plate of seafood to the lawn and wait for the sun to set over the Atlantic; wooden play equipment will keep the children happy until it's time for bed.
