The Stables at The Old Barn, Sudbrooke Lane, Nettleham Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England
A good, solid, rustic retreat in open countryside but near a charming village: perfect for walkers. And perfect for those who want to explore Lincoln with its Norman cathedral and medieval remains. You're 40 minutes from the coast: Sandilands and Theddlethorpe for beaches and dunes, Donner Nook for bird and seal spotting. This lovely, single-storey building flanks the main granary and has been thoughtfully converted from old stables using local stone and pan tiles for the roof. Inside is cosy, not too contemporary, with cream walls, laminate floors and exposed brickwork in the living room/kitchen area (where there's a handy sofabed). You get all the mod cons you need to rustle up a meal and eat in, and with the curtains drawn it is snuggly here, but there are super restaurants and pubs nearby should you be feeling more adventurous. Furnishings are a mix of antique and modern pieces, the TV is ever so flat and there are exposed beams. Sleep peacefully in a large mahogany sleigh bed with floral sheets and views onto a well-kept garden. Outside, is a table and chairs and barbecue. Perfect for a couple or a small family - Nicola is on site to give useful information but is completely unintrusive.
