The Old Village Hall, Caerhays Estate, Caerhays, Gorran, St Austell, Cornwall, England
In a village on the Caerhays Estate is this restored granite building, constructed in 1900 as a reading room for estate staff. Set peacefully beside the lane, overlooking the green valley and the Caerhays Castle Gardens, it looks every inch the village hall, with its arched double entrance doors and its smart red brickwork. It has been just as impeccably restored inside. The hall where school theatricals once took place has become a vast and comfortable sitting/dining room, with wall-to-wall carpeting and three French windows, big mirrors on aqua-blue walls, two fireplaces cosy with wood-burners and a large cream sofa with pale blue cushions. There's a state-of-the-art kitchen with a great long table, an extra sitting room with an extra TV, and bedrooms that exude comfort and charm. Colours are warm cream and mellow green, headboards are padded, covers quilted, curtains lined and bathrooms beautifully tiled. The new garden, its sunken terrace free of brisk south-westerly breezes, backs onto open farmland. From whichever direction you arrive, the approach down narrow lanes is through rolling, glorious countryside, and the estate's private beach is bucket and spade heaven. The Old Village Hall is a treat for families.
