Church Farm Cottage, Church Farm, Middle Common, Chippenham, Wiltshire, England
No madding crowds in Kington Langley – one reason why Kate and Will fell for this cluster of pretty 18th-century farm buildings with dry stone walls, five-barred gate and cheery daffodils. He's an interior designer, she a paper restorer, together they juggle an antiques shop and a workshop in the old farmyard barns. Your cottage lies opposite, in what was once the stables and hayloft. Step into a light open sitting and dining room, decked out with quirky antique pieces (some for sale once you've tried them!). Easy to rustle up a Sunday roast in the fitted kitchen with its unusual jigsaw pattern floors. Duck into the low-beamed bedroom upstairs and slip back in time as you recline on a scroll-ended settee or curl up on a brass four-poster. (Although the house is best for two, children or easy-going couples could kip downstairs on a comfy aerobed.) Outside the dreamy theme continues, with pecking hens and grazing sheep beyond an organic kitchen garden and living willow fence; a bluebell woodland walk is to follow. Look more closely and wildlife explodes into sight: badgers, hedgehogs, soaring birds of prey – hard to believe you're minutes from the M4. If you love rural tranquillity and all things old and pretty, you'll be in clover here.
