Wharfside, Mousehole, Mousehole, Cornwall, England
The views from this listed quayside cottage are worth staying in for: boats in the harbour before you, children scampering on the beach, St Michael's Mount rising from the bay beyond. You are ensconced in an old net loft, now the top floor of Emma and Iain's family harbour-front home. Walk past lobster pots up the 'ope', then up some stone steps to your own entrance - and step into a galley kitchen that holds all you need for two. Sash windows in the sitting room draw you in, while light beams down from a north-facing skylight - added when the loft was changed into a studio for the artists that flocked here at the end of the 19th century; read up on the Newlyn School in the books left out for you - original wood block and hand tinted prints by some artists you'll learn about enliven the white walls. Seagrass matting, Ercol oak table and chairs, bright, thick curtains, window seats, a small sofa and a wood-burner are all you need to feel happy here. A super comfy bed in the small bedroom, and excellent linen, will clinch a good's night sleep... until you wake to toast your toes on the heated slate floor in the shower room. Walk to Lamorna, a tiny seaside hamlet once frequented by smugglers, or to Newlyn with its art galleries and fish markets. You'll eat well in the evening - there are a couple of very good restaurants a stone's throw away - take time to wander the umpteen alleyways that lead you back home. Absolutely wonderful for two.
