Pen Fistla Cottage, Pen Fistla Barns, Penllyn, Cowbridge, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales
Join the dots between sheep, horses and cows and sniff the grass-scented air as you enter the village of Penllyn in the hills behind Cardiff. The long, low stone cottage forms a large, friendly courtyard garden with the farmhouse. The oldest part, from 1760, was a lambing shed – today it's warm and inviting. Owner Ceri creates a family feel: Welsh cakes and a hamper greet you, there's a big trampoline on the lawn, and impromptu cricket games when the sun's out. Inside are her aunt's lively farm paintings on the walls, oak floors underfoot, exposed stonework and wood beams, leather sofas and a wood-burner. Rich red fabrics and iron sconce lights add a castle-like air (mythical Penllyn Castle sits on the neighbouring hill) and in the kitchen is a Welsh slate floor, red-checked tablecloth and all the practical bits you need. Everything has been beautifully renovated. Luxuriate in the lush pink duvet and brass-globed bedstead in the double bedroom, or go rustic with the oak and avocado theme in the twin. There's a sparkling family wet room with a rainfall shower, too. Loaf on the patio, or stroll to the chic coffee shops and delis in Cowbridge (30 minutes on the footpath from the house). Two family-friendly pubs are walkable, and Cardiff's attractions are ten miles off.
