Big Barn

Big Barn, Larcombe Farm, East Allington, Totnes, Devon, England

A Chanel-clad model strikes a pose with African elephants in a photograph on a stone wall above the 14-place dining table. You wouldn't guess from the approach – flower-tossed narrow lane and private drive round a lake, deep in 136 acres of South Hams farmland – but this threshing barn is urban chic Elle Deco inside. A sleek black granite-topped kitchen (still practical, with stacks of tableware), big sofa seating area and work-of-art wood-burner complete the bright upper floor. Antique and modern collide cleverly in the four boutique bedrooms downstairs, with huge Louis XVI and Victorian ironwork beds, wallpaper accents, lake views. Bath and wet rooms mix dark slate, oak doors, polished concrete, and there's a silent, eco-friendly heat recovery system. The mezzanine, up a spiralling staircase, can be den or extra bedroom. Owner Caroline (in the farmhouse) has put her heart and soul into the renovation and keeping the farmland working. Baby and toddler kit for young family getaways, terrace barbecue for parties, paddock walks, geese, hares – and Dartmouth and famed Blackpool Sands minutes away. Completely stunning.

Well-fenced pond in grounds. Children must be accompanied.
