Farthingwood Barn, Wheddon Cross, Somerset, England
Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall eat your heart out! Julian, Rachael and the kids have lost themselves in a world of hens, sheep, goats and pigs – which they're delighted to share. This rustic barn sits on a simple yard with old sheds to one side and nothing but rolling farmland and woods behind. Early morning, tug on reluctant wellies and take on pig-feeding duty or welcoming a newborn lamb. Kick off the mud and head back into your pine-rich, country casual 'home'. The kitchen is family friendly, so start the day squeezed round the massive old table dunking into golden yellow yolks and glimpsing the views. Days speed by – walking the nearby Coleridge Way, trotting and cycling the endless trails or hitting Dunster and the coast. Then comes your 'River Cottage' moment. Julian is a great chef – and if you wish, after a day's adventures, he'll ply you with applewood smoked goose breast and Somerset pork – home grown of course. It's a short distance back to bed: downstairs dazzles with white linen, and its own neat bathroom; or head up under the eaves for a cosy night's slumber beneath unpolluted stars. Rural, rustic, beguiling.
