Lower Hedge Farm, Hedge Lane, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England
Lapped by waves of green hills and rural tranquillity, a 17th-century farmhouse sparkles with 21st-century splendour: from the hallway's deep glassed-over well to the retro-chic kitchen with Aga, expect masses of style and top quality everything. The starring space is the sun room, with a smile of leather sofas around a vast plasma screen, an inglenook fireplace stretching up to the high beamed ceiling (there's underfloor heating too) and masses of light. A pleasure to eat together around the original farmhouse table, the dining room encased in brick, beam and glass. For breakfasts and quick lunches, there's a chunky kitchen table. Upstairs to the bedrooms, all come in neutral shades with oak and bright art; bathrooms are simply gorgeous and every one gets a great view. Single beds line the atticky top floor, perfect for children. Outside, sink into a hot tub while the barbecue smokes on the terrace: kids have swings and slide, adults a games room. Glastonbury Tor rises to the west, your only neighbours woolly sheep. Paul, who lives down the lane and spent years nurturing the farm back to life, can arrange a chef, cider tasting, cycle hire or a yoga session – or anything in between.
